When to Start Cancer Screening?

There is no “one fits all” time or age for when cancer screening should start and exactly what that screening should involve. It is important to understand that unfortunately cancer screening is not perfect and not all cancers can be reliably screened for.

There is a large proliferation of cancer screening packages available in the market that are neither consistent with guidelines nor supported by evidence. Many of these offer a panel of cancer marker blood tests that claim to be able to detect cancers early. Unfortunately, there is no evidence to support this and some of these packages may potentially lead to more harm than good.

Therefore, we focus on an evidence-based approach that should be customised to the individual, taking into account age, lifestyle, risk factors and relevant family history.

Cancers Most Relevant to Men

Two of the most common cancers in men are bowel (colorectal) cancer and prostate cancer.

Bowel Cancer

Bowel cancer screening should be discussed and considered from the age of 45 years.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer screening is not as straightforward as the screening is less reliable than bowel cancer screening.

“Approximately 70% of men with a raised PSA do NOT have prostate cancer, which can create fear, anxiety and lead to unnecessary prostate biopsies, which are not without risk.”

Dr Cameron recommends a discussion about the pros and cons (yes, there are cons) of prostate cancer screening and then making an informed decision regarding this.

The main screening tool, the PSA blood test, has a high incidence of false positives.

Approximately 70% of men with a raised PSA do NOT have prostate cancer, which can create fear, anxiety and lead to unnecessary prostate biopsies, which are not without risk.

It’s important for every patient to understand these limitations before screening.
